Kings and Commonwealth Avenues form two sides of the National Triangle and are a core element of the Griffins' plan for Canberra. The central positioning of the Avenues serve an important ceremonial and symbolic role in the structure of Canberra, connecting important nodes such as Parliament House, City Hill and Russell.
The current character of the Avenues is degraded and does not reflect their significant role within the National Capital.' In response to this, a Place Renewal Plan is being undertaken to provide a planning and design framework that will help guide future works and ensure that the character of the Avenues is both memorable and functional.
The Place Renewal Plan will re-establish the important symbolic role of the Avenues, repair and re-conceptualise their layout, form and character, and will guide the planning and design for staged implementation of improvements.
The report is expected to be finished by mid-2015.
